Five Little Moving Hacks That Will Save You Time

As exciting as it is to start over in a new home, the actual process of moving can be time consuming and stressful. But with these little moving hacks, you can save time and your nerves.

Save cleaning until the end.

"Clean as you go" is a good manta for everyday life, but not for moving. You'll waste a lot of time if you try to clean as you pack. By the time you reach the end of the packing and moving process, things will have been dirtied again. Pack everything up without giving cleaning a thought – and then give the house or apartment a good top-to-bottom cleaning once everything is out. It will be a lot easier to clean when there are no boxes or furniture in the way, too.

Pack up the kitchen first.

Of all of the rooms in your home, your kitchen likely has the most little gadgets and pieces that need packing. If you pack this room first, you'll feel good having gotten it out of the way. Plus, you'll have access to your full array of packing supplies, so you won't have to make do with the leftovers or try shoving things into boxes that they don't exactly fit into. It's a lot easier to shove pillows and towels into plastic bags last-minute than to try to pack mixers and glasses when you've run out of boxes or packing paper.

Toss things in a "donate" pile as you pack.

Many people try to go through and sort out the items they want to donate before they start packing. But this is super time-consuming. It's a lot easier to just designate one big box for donations. Drag it from room to room as you pack, and toss items in as you come across them.

Use towels, linens and other soft items as padding.

Instead of spending hours wrapping each vase and glass in tissue paper, use items you have to transport anyways to pad these items. Roll each glass up in a washcloth or towel, and add it to the box. When you're finished, you'll have tackled packing the linens and packing the glasses.

Only invite a few people to help you move.

This might seem to go against conventional logic at first. The more helpers you have the better, right? Wrong. If you invite too many people to help, they'll just be tripping over each other and you'll have a hard time keeping everyone organized. Only invite a few people who you know will stay very organized and helpful throughout the moving process. Unless you have a huge home, 4 or 5 moving helpers should be plenty.
