5 Precautions That Will Make Your Winter Move Go Smoothly

Moving during any time of the year requires a lot of work and effort. Moving during the wintertime though requires a few extra precautions. Here are a few additional things you will need to do in order to ensure that your move this winter goes smoothly.

Set Aside Warm Clothes

While you are packing, make sure that you set aside some warm clothes for moving day. You'll want to make sure that you wear shoes that have some good tread on them so you don't slip and fall on the slippery sidewalks. You'll also want to set aside gloves, hats, scarfs and warm jackets. If friends or family are helping you move, you may want to keep out additional clothes in case they are not fully prepared for the weather.

Pack Light

When you move during the winter time, you generally have to deal with wet and icy stairs, sidewalks and driveways, which makes it even more important for you to pack light. When possible, instead of stuffing a bunch of items inside of a large box, go for multiple small boxes instead.

Small boxes are easier to lift and carry. You will be able to more easily see where you are going when you are moving small boxes, and are less likely to slip and fall.

Clear The Sidewalks

Make sure that you don't pack away your snow shovel, rake, broom or salt before the moving trucks arrives. Be sure to budget some time into your moving day for cleaning the sidewalks and driveways at both your old home and your new home. This will decrease the chance that anyone gets hurt during your move.

Protect The Inside Of Your House

You don't want to leave your old house a mess, nor create a mess in your new home before you even get settled. Make sure all the high-traffic areas of your home are protected from the snow, ice, water and sludge that will get tracked in and out of your house during your moving day.

Lay down large pieces of either plastic or cardboard in your entry ways, and along the pathways to all the boxes and furniture that you need to move. This will help keep the mess from everyone's shoes to a minimum, and will make it easier for you to clean up at the end of the day.

Keep Beverages On Hand

Don't forget to stock up on beverages for everyone who is helping you move. Moving is a lot of work, and you need to make sure that everyone who is assisting you stays hydrated. It can be easy to forget to drink water when it is cold outside, which is why you need to make sure that you provide drinks for everyone helping you. You may even want to keep your coffee maker or teapot out so you can provide everyone with hot drink options as well.

If you take the precautions discussed above, you should be able to sidestep the elements that make moving in the winter a tricky process and your move should go off smoothly. Just remember to be prepared for the weather that you may encounter.
